Welcome to the Great Ocean Road
Stretching for some 240 kilometres along the coastline of southern Victoria, the Great Ocean Road is definitely something to add to the 'bucket list'.
Whether you enjoy the surf, sightseeing, or you simply want to escape the everyday, you will find something spectacular along the Great Ocean Road. From the beautiful coastal areas to the hinterland and everything in between, the Great Ocean Road is a sheer delight.
The road itself is a giant memorial to all those soldiers that lost their lives in World War I. Work began on the Great Ocean Road in September 1919. Along the way are many memorials built to ensure lives lost are not forgotten.
Some of Australia's best known attractions are dotted along the picturesque Great Ocean Road. Possibly the most famous landmark is the Twelve Apostles, natural limestone mounds caused by erosion of headland. These majestic stacks are eroded by constant pressure from the sea, which causes them to disintergrate about 2 centimetres each year. Despite the name, only eight Apostles are visible from Great Ocean Road, since a 50 metre Apostle collapsed into the sea in 2005.
Another well known attraction of the Great Ocean Road is Bells Beach, the only protected surfing reserve in the world. Renowned for its surfing, Bells Beach has hosted the Rip Curl Pro here every Easter since 1973. Some Think you can hold your own? Grab a board and test the right hand breaks - the best conditions are during autumn and winter.
The Surf Coast follows the Great Ocean Road from Bellarine Peninsular at Torquay to the gentle beaches of Cape Bridgewater. Many learn-to-surf schools are set up here, so even if you've never set foot on a board, you don't have to miss out.
If you prefer to explore dry land, try koala spotting in the Kenett River area of Lorne. Cape Otway, the southernmost tip of the Great Ocean Road, is a haven for wildlife.
Great Otway National Park is also a popular location to visit. Here you can take advantage of the walking tracks, go horse riding or mountain biking through some areas, or enjoy a picnic in the tranquil surroundings. Visitors can also camp - however, you will need to get in fast!
