Home to some popular icons, Carlton is located just north of Melbourne's central business district. Dominated by residential terraces and 19th century public buildings, Carlton is steeped in history.
The superb Carlton Gardens were originally constructed for an exhibition in 1880. Now World Heritage lsited, the Gardens feature everything from vibrant flower beds to stunning fountains. There is also a children's playground that is based on a 19th centuy maze - truly a remarkable sight!
Another icon of Carlton is Melbourne's own 'Little Italy' - also known as Lygon Street. The first place in Melbourne to offer outdoor dining, Lygon Street was also home to the first espresso machine in Australia. This well known strip has the largest selection of Italian cafes and restaurants in Australia, making it a popular destination all year round.
Carlton is rich in culture, from the Piazza Italia to the many museums and galleries. Every Sunday morning, crowds of people enjoy the free jazz performances in the Piazza Italia. Sample a genuine wood-fired pizza, or admire the sundial, the centrepiece of the paved piazza, which was a joint project between the city and Milan, Melbourne's twin city.
If you are looking for entertainment, Carlton is the ideal destination. The IMAX theatre at the Melbourne Museum contains the biggest 3D screen in the world. The Museum is located within Carlton Gardens, and regularly houses new exhibitions.
La Mama Theatre offers everything from play readings to kids' entertainment and poetry festivals. Dracula's Theatre Restaurant is an unique, exciting venue, where you can enjoy horror comedy with amazing costumes and talent, along with a delicious three course meal. Recommended for a mature audience, Dracula's will be sure to amuse, entertain and horrify!
If you prefer your entertainment in quieter form, Carlton is filled with many bookshops - both independent and chain retailers. Spend some time browsing, as the cafe culture of Carlton makes it the ideal place to relax with a good book and an espresso.
