Hotels & Accommodation in Lorne

Based between Louttit Bay and Otway Forest, the coastal town of Lorne is a real piece of paradise.

The township is situated on a protected bay that overlooks Bass Strait, providing both swimming and surfing beaches. For families and those wanting a nice leisurely swim, try Louttit Bay. Surfers will find some ideal spots such as Baldy Rock, Cumberland River and Sawmills.

Visit the picturesque Erskine Falls, only 9 kilometres from town. A brief relaxed walk will give you an overlook of 30 metres of cascading falls. Sheoak Falls, 3 kilometres south of Lorne, is a slightly harder 1 kilometre return walk from the carpark. Once you reach the falls, marvel at the water falling over a dark rock face. The natural amphitheatre of this area makes for amazing viewing.

The Great Otway National Park forms part of the backdrop of Lorne. Covering an area of 103,000 hectares, the Great Otway National Park is a superb combination of wet forests, rugged coastline and woodlands. Enjoy the range of walking tracks, which lead you through fern gullies and past cascading waterfalls. Many picnic opportunities exist here, from Melba Gully to Shelly Beach.

To see some spectacular sights, head up to Teddy's Lookout. Here you can see the Saint George River, Otway Ranges, and along the coastline. More fantastic viewing spots can be found along the Great Ocean Road, between the Surf Lifesaving Club and Point Grey.

Keen fishermen will find great spots at the pier. Both the Erskine and St George Rivers are also popular. Enjoy scenic views while trying your luck at Cumberland River. Surrounded by evergreen forests and 60 metre cliffs, the river is crystal clear, and is particularly spectacular near its entrance to Bass Strait.

If you would prefer to spend your time in Lorne relaxing, the cafe culture here is a delight. Wander along Mountjoy Parade, where you can enjoy a latte and shop in beautiful boutiques.

Every year, Lorne hosts some of the largest events in Victoria. The Falls Festival, held every year from the 29th of December to the 1st of January, has built an incredible following. And it is easy to see why! Bands such as Franz Ferdinand, Kings of Leon and many other local and international artists have featured at the festival over the years.

Also in early January is the renowned Pier to Pub swim. This 1.2 kilometre swim is the largest organised swim in the world, and has been capped to 4,000 competitors. This event is so popular, a ballot system had to be introduced!

During May, Lorne also plays host to the Great Ocean Road Marathon. Starting at the Lorne Post Office, the marathon stretches for 45 kilometres down to the Apollo Bay Hotel. Truly a unique way to experience the Great Ocean Road.
